Man’s Best Friend(s)

I’m a dog guy. Everyone knows this about me. It’s no secret. From the time I was a young boy, if a stray wandered into our yard, he was now MY dog: There was Ralph, the Sheep Dog, and Red, the Irish Setter to name a couple. Even though they only stayed for a couple days before moving on, I still think of them as my dog. Probably because I love dogs. Did I make that clear? I’m a dog guy. Everyone knows this about me.

In my lifetime, I’ve known and loved more than 20 canine companions. Nomi, Velvet, Stub, Stupido, Isha, Chip, Dale, Jack, Khula, Sidney, Rosie, Bruno, and the most recent addition to our family, Louie.

There’s something comforting about having a companion who wants to be with you, who is excited to see you and is keyed into your every move. Can it be a little obnoxious over time? Of course. Can you put on shoes without the dogs thinking you are taking them for a walk? Never.

But are they thrilled when you walk back in the house after getting the mail? Always!

Can a cat person say the same for their emotional support animal? Hardly ever.

In the words of Chance, from Homeward Bound, “Dogs rule and cats drool”.
